Let’s begin your journey into the world of chess by learning the basic rules of chess game for beginners step by step.
What is Chess?
Chess is a two-player game played on a square board with 64 squares arranged in 8 rows and 8 columns. Each player begins with 16 pieces:
- 1 King
- 1 Queen
- 2 Rooks
- 2 Bishops
- 2 Knights
- 8 Pawns
One player uses white pieces, and the other uses black. White always moves first.

Basic Rules of Chess Game
Now let’s look at the basic rules of chess that every beginner should know.
1. Objective of the Game
The main goal in chess is to checkmate your opponent’s king. This means putting the king in a position where it is under attack and cannot escape.
The game can also end in a draw if neither player can checkmate.
2. How the Pieces Move
Each piece in chess moves differently. Understanding their movement is one of the most important basic rules of chess game.
♔ King
- Moves one square in any direction
- Very important – protect it at all times
♕ Queen
- Moves any number of squares in any direction (horizontal, vertical, or diagonal)
- Most powerful piece on the board
♖ Rook
- Moves any number of squares, but only horizontally or vertically
- Very strong in open positions
♗ Bishop
- Moves diagonally any number of squares
- Each bishop stays on the same color (light or dark)
♘ Knight
- Moves in an L-shape: two squares in one direction, then one square at a right angle
- The only piece that can jump over other pieces
♙ Pawn
- Moves one square forward (two squares on its first move)
- Captures diagonally
- When it reaches the other side of the board, it can be promoted to any other piece (usually a queen)

3. Special Rules
Some basic rules of chess game for beginners also include special moves that are good to know early on.
🏰 Castling
- A special move involving the king and rook
- The king moves two squares toward a rook, and the rook jumps over the king
- It can only happen if:
- Neither piece has moved before
- No pieces are between them
- The king is not in check or moving through check
♙ En Passant
- A special pawn capture
- If a pawn moves two squares forward and lands beside an opponent’s pawn, that opponent can capture it as if it had only moved one square
👑 Promotion
- When a pawn reaches the last row (8th for white, 1st for black), it is promoted
- Usually promoted to a queen, but it can become a rook, bishop, or knight too
4. Check and Checkmate
- Check: Your king is under attack. You must protect it immediately
- Checkmate: Your king is under attack, and you have no way to escape. Game over!
- Stalemate: Your opponent has no legal moves, but the king is not in check. This is a draw
Tips for Beginners
Now that you know the basic rules of chess, here are some tips to help you play better:
Control the Center
Move your pawns to the center (e4, d4) and develop your knights and bishops early.
Don’t Bring Your Queen Out Too Early
Use smaller pieces to control the board first.
Castle Early
This helps protect your king and prepares your rooks for action.
Watch Every Move
Before making a move, think about what your opponent might do next.
